Effects of Thyroidism on Infertility

Infertility is a rapidly growing disorder and lifestyle is one of the major factors causing this syndrome. Infertility is the condition when a woman is unable to conceive a baby – the man or the woman can have fertility problems.

Infertility is mainly a hormonal disorder- like diabetes, PCOS, Thyroidism. Hormonal imbalance can have a negative impact on menstruation, ovulation, affecting a women’s fertility.

THYROIDISM

The thyroid gland is situated in the neck and the main function is metabolism.

  • Thyroidism affects the reproductory system in both men and women. In men it can cause low sperm count requiring male fertility treatment.

Hypothyroidism negatively impacts ovulation and release of eggs for fertilisation.

Polycystic Ovaries syndrome (PCOS) and thyroidism have similar symptoms and impact although treatments are different PCOS is insulin produced by the pancreas and Thyroidism is related to the Thyroid serum produced by the thyroid gland..

HOW DOES THYROID IMBALANCE AFFECT FEMALE REPRODUCTORY SYSTEM

  1. Thyroid imbalance causes fertility issues like miscarriage, ovulation disorders, irregular menstruation.
  2. Symptoms of Hypothyroidism or under-production of the hormones include fatigue or low energy, weakness in the muscles, weight gain, depression, irregular menstruation and ovulation causing infertility.
  3. Dual diagnosis is when there are two factors causing a common disorder like PCOS and Thyroidism.
  4. Men also have fertility problems like low sperm count due to thyroidism. Low sperm count is the inability to fertilise the female ova.

A shift in lifestyle can greatly help in controlling fertility issues. Like

  • Avoid stress by meditating and practising Yoga regularly
  • Get 7 to 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep
  • Exercise or take part in a sport that interests you
  • Consider a diet which contains balanced amounts of iodine, greens, fruits, certain milk products, fish, lean meats
  • Supplements of Vitamins, minerals, can also be taken on the advice of the doctor or nutritionist.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption
  • Do not sit continuously for longer hours
