Understanding fertility blood tests

We want to ensure that the whole IVF treatment process is self-explanatory and transparent for anyone considering it. Blood tests are an essential part of your IVF journey, as they help us to predict your response to treatment and ensure the safety of the process.

Women and couples must know precisely what is in store when they begin their IVF journey, so here is everything you need to know about the blood tests you will be expected to have throughout the process.

What blood tests need to be taken before IVF treatment?

Before starting treatment, some tests will need to be carried out to ensure that you are being treated safely and effectively and that you and your partner are in an optimum condition to achieve the best outcome from IVF treatment.

Our specialist will measure the reserve of eggs in your body by investigating the levels of anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) or follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in your blood. Knowing the number of eggs in your body will help your fertility specialist to understand how your body might respond to the treatment and help them formulate a personalized treatment strategy for you.

Monitoring hormone levels during treatment may be necessary to control the process and prevent complications.

As well as this, some routine screening blood tests will be carried out before initiation of the treatment to rule out HIV, Hepatitis B, and C infections and to ensure Rubella immunity. This is to make sure that these infections are not being passed on to the baby; on some occasions, additional tests are also necessary to flag potential incompatibilities between parent and baby's blood types, as well as possible genetic disorders that can be transmitted from the eggs or sperm to the embryos (babies).

Finally, testing for HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), a pregnancy hormone, in the blood or urine to reveal whether the embryo's transfer into the uterus has been successful.

How long do the tests last, and how do I share them with the clinic?

Please bring these along to your appointment if you or your partner have had any blood tests in the last 12-24 months. These tests may provide the team with helpful information about your circumstances. but it is still possible that further tests will be necessary, or some of the tests might have to be repeated before or later in the process.

Suppose you have not yet had tests before your ultrasound scan and consultation. In that case, our fertility specialists can make a plan for the necessary next steps and recommend the proper treatment for you based on a discussion of your history.
